Star Clippers: Wake Up To the World

As many of us have realized over the past two years of pandemic and hardship, living a life that is rewarding, adventurous, and invigorating has come more and more into vogue. It may be that hardship has prompted us to reevaluate what’s important to us personally and for those we love. As travel is returning with the (hopeful) waning of the pandemic, people are seeking something specific and meaningful in their travels. That is: experiences. Experiences that are personal, impactful, and bring meaning to their lives.

At Seadog Travels, we focus on experiences and those nautical travel providers that provide singularly excellent and life-enhancing travel experiences. You could also call this purposeful travel. Not mere vacations to relax, but adventures and experiences to be had.

In our view, experiential and purposeful travel is the only way to travel. Enter Star Clippers. Formed in the early 1990s with the vision of recapturing the Golden Age of Sail, but with modern conveniences, Star Clippers is meant for people brimming with a spirit of adventure, a love of nature, and those with – or wanting to have – a deeper connection with the ocean. After all, sailing is one of the most eco-friendly types of transportation anywhere in the world.

There aren’t many travel companies like Star Clippers. That’s just one reason they are at the top of our list of the best ocean travel providers.

The Ships

Star Clippers operates three ships: Star Flyer, Star Clipper, and Royal Clipper. Once onboard, all will immerse you into the world of sailing, relaxation, casual elegance, and fun. The first two ships began sailing in 1991 and 1992, respectively, and are of similar design. These ships carry only 170 passengers per ship in 85 staterooms. Royal Clipper, by comparison, is somewhat larger and carries up to 227 passengers. Royal Clipper began service in 2000.

Star Clippers

Wow! So few passengers, yet so much fun to be had! Star Flyer and Star Clipper are 379 feet long. Royal Clipper is 439 feet long. What’s that matter? Well, there won’t be any bumping into other people on these sails. No long lines for meals. No endless waits for a paddleboard or kayak. Breathing room. Open spaces. That’s what it’s all about.

Most of the accommodations on the ships are staterooms, but there are some larger suites on Royal Clipper. All ships offer at least one owner’s cabin, which give you a premium of space and amenities while onboard. Square footage in the living areas range from 108 to 430 square feet. All are well-appointed, attractive, colorful, and nautical in their décor.

The Experience

On a Star Clippers voyage, being in your cabin will likely be the last thing on your mind. As ones who have sailed on tall ships before, we think the closeness that you’ll feel to nature and the ocean is something that will amaze you. It does that to us. That’s why we love sailing so much. Being close to the water. Moving under wind power alone. Imagining what sailing was like 200 years ago while sipping a cold drink. It really is amazing.

While on deck, you can enjoy a dip in a hot tub while sailing to your next port. Those wanting a bit more vigor in their day can climb up to the crow’s nest, help with the ship’s rigging, and even take a turn driving the ship with the captain. The act of navigating a sailing ship requires a different skill set and is definitely different than driving a car!

Want to get in the water? Star Clippers can help with that, too. A variety of water sporting toys are available to allow you to have fun in the water. Whether it’s kayaking, windsurfing, water skiing, or swimming, you’ll have an abundance of water activities from which to choose. There’s nothing like a swim in the warm Caribbean Sea. If you haven’t done it, you must do it!

Other venues for social activities onboard include the piano lounge, indoor and outdoor tropical bars, libraries, atrium, fitness center, and spa. The amenities available vary by ship, but you won’t find any lack of great experiences – below decks, above decks, or off the ship exploring different ports. Oh, and don’t forget the great meals onboard, too!

The Destinations

Star Clippers ships currently sail to the Caribbean, Panama Canal, Costa Rica, Central America, eastern and western areas of the Mediterranean Sea, and Ocean Crossings. In addition, longer Grand Voyage sails are also available for people who want a longer sailing experience.

Love the Caribbean? Then plan on sailing to places such as Saint Martin, Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, St. Kitts, St. Barts, and the British Virgin Islands (BVI). St. Barts and BVI will satisfy your taste for a luxe tropical experience while islands such as Dominica and Nevis will bring you closer to nature – on land and at sea.

Examples of Mediterranean ports visited by Star Clippers include the Greek Isles, Malta, Lisbon, Malaga, Rome, Cannes, St. Tropez, Monaco, and more. Just imagine warm summer days of sailing and visits to iconic European ports that blend history with modern civilization.

In addition, Costa Rica is a relatively new offering from Star Clippers and expertly matches the eco-friendly Star Clippers sailing experience with the jungle ecosystems of Costa Rica. It’s all about nature, being a true part of the world, and learning how to keep our world’s ecosystems healthy and vibrant. Finally, Panama Canal transits and transoceanic crossings are unique in their own right. Ocean crossing voyages are the quintessential example of getting away from it all and really embracing the seagoing experience.

The Deals

Star Clippers offers great deals on a variety of their sails at any given time and it’s important to check their sale page often: https://www.starclippers.com/us-dom/specials.html. Ready to Sail?

As a company committed to exploring and protecting the oceans of the world, Seadog Travels sees Star Clippers as a shining example of pursuing both of those goals. Helping people to explore different parts of the world while helping to protect the oceans and ocean life via eco-friendly – and truly beautiful – modern sailing ships. There’s good reason so many people are repeat passengers on Star Clippers ships. That’s because it brings together the best of our world: past, present, and future.
