The Pirates are happy to announce that Rebecca Simon, Ph.D., pirate historian, is joining the team at Naked Pirate Travels. Dr. Simon will be working with the Pirates to develop a unique, immersive, and historically-focused itinerary for our first pirate-themed Caribbean sail, which will occur early February 2023. Her expertise, insight, and knowledge will be invaluable as we develop the itinerary for the sail, which is being crafted to give people an authentic, fun, and engaging exploration of the real piracy in the Caribbean that took place in the 17th and 18th Centuries. Dr. Simon will also serve as the travel host for the February 2023 sail and will lead our exploration of the Bahamas for a week.
Rebecca Simon, Ph.D. Dr. Rebecca Simon, a Los Angeles native, has a Ph.D. in the history of 18th-century piracy from King’s College London. Her first book, Why We Love Pirates: The Hunt for Captain Kidd and How He Changed Piracy Forever was published in 2020 and is currently working on two book projects about the female pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Read and life on the pirate ship. Her article, “The Revenge of Anne [Bonny] and Mary [Read]” published by Truly*Adventurous, was optioned by ABC studios. Rebecca has been featured on Netflix’s docu-drama The Lost Pirate Kingdom, History Channel’s Beyond Oak Island and The Curse of Oak Island, and BBC4’s Britain’s Outlaws: Highwaymen, Pirates, and Rogues. You can find her discussing her research on piracy on podcasts such as History Extra, History Hit, You’re Dead to Me, and Getting Curious With Jonathan Van Ness among others. In addition to her historical work, Rebecca has several years of experience as a film-location/history tour guide with Brit Movie Tours in London. Her other interests include traveling, classical singing, piano, weight training, and her pug, Pippin.
